Winter Fashion Weeks: Copenhagen & Berlin
The Winter Fashion Weeks in Copenhagen and Berlin once again clearly demonstrated how differently fashion capitals position themselves – and which topics are currently at the forefront of the industry.
Berlin Fashion Week 2026: Values Over Spectacle
This year’s Berlin Fashion Week was defined by conceptual clarity and social responsibility. Particularly noteworthy:
the official program featured two Ukrainian brands, with a strong focus on upcycling and sustainable production.
This is no coincidence. The Fashion Council Germany is deliberately supporting emerging Ukrainian labels during their development phase – especially when sustainability is understood not as a marketing tool, but as a lived practice. Berlin thus remains an important hub for progressive, future-oriented fashion concepts.
Upcycling as a Statement
The presence of Ukrainian designers once again underscored that upcycling is no longer a niche topic. Instead, it is increasingly seen as a creative and ethical approach that brings together design, responsibility, and innovation – an approach that perfectly aligns with Berlin’s fashion scene.
Street Style: Very Berlin
Despite low temperatures, Berlin’s street style appeared surprisingly vibrant – raw, functional, and consciously understated. Layering, oversized silhouettes, and pragmatic elegance dominated the cityscape.
Typically Berlin: less staging, more attitude.
An International Perspective
And yet, one wish remains unfulfilled. In a global comparison, Berlin Fashion Week still lacks a stronger international presence – both in terms of guests and media as well as buyers. While Copenhagen has long established itself as an international reference point for sustainable fashion, Berlin continues to operate more strongly within a European context.
Conclusion
Berlin Fashion Week 2026 was conceptually strong, politically relevant, and creatively consistent. Supporting Ukrainian brands sends a clear message: fashion can and should take responsibility.
What is needed going forward is a stronger international opening in order to make these important issues even more visible on a global scale.
